Cien Años de Soledad by Alfredo Jaar makes reference to the title of Garcia Marquez’s famous novel from 1967, which tells the story of several generations of one family living in a fictitious town in Colombia. Jaar places the words “Cien años de soledad” (which mean “one hundred years of solitude”) on the wall in white neon. He creates an ironic tension however, by adding below in red, in parenthesis and in a different, print type font the phrase “no realmente” (meaning “not really”). Jaar’s work takes the shape of an ironic commentary and aims at a critique of the illusion of the independence of nation states such as Colombia or the artist’s country of origin Chile. Like in many of his works from the late 1970s and the 1980s, Jaar’s aim is to provide his audience with a more global perspective that takes into account existing power relations and the role of the United States play in relation to the countries in the southern part of the continent.
