Flash, Bang, Wallop 11 is a colorful, hand-sized, polygonal sculpture by British artist Richard Deacon. The flat, glazed ceramic is held up with the help of a thin sheet of metal and is presented on a wall base. In contrast to the colored and glazed surface, the cut edges of the slab are untreated. Ceramics have played an important role in Deacon’s artistic practice as one of the UK’s most prominent sculptors since the mid- 1990s. It is through ceramics that Deacon continues his search for the pictorial in sculpture. The flat surface of the object with its orange and green glazing, lends the small sculpture a pictorial quality. This is enhanced by the way the work is supported and presented standing upright on a shelf, resembling a family photograph placed on a sideboard. Furthermore, similar to the process of analogue photography, where the final image only presents itself much later in the lab, the final interplay of colors on the ceramic surface only emerges after the firing process. The work was created with Niels Dietrich, who runs a Cologne-based ceramics workshop and with whom Deacon has been collaborating for many years.
