Language and translation play an important role in Polish artist Maria Loboda’s works. In fact, it could be argued that the artist treats reality and the material world as a universe of signs and meanings, interrogating the symbolic connotations of physical objects in relation to time and history and investigating the connections between material things and the spiritual realm; between rationality and mysticism. The Ngombo is a series of large digital photo prints. Typical for the Loboda’s often humorous approach, she renders the seemingly mundane contents of women’s handbags spilled on the carpet, which only on closer expectation reveal their ambiguous symbolism. Among the expected articles of daily use we discover an additional random array of objects including prescription pills, animal bones and half scribbled notes. These objects immediately evoke a darker narrative and make us draw certain conclusions about the mysterious fictional owner of the handbag. The photographs are inspired by what Loboda describes as “shaking up the divination basket” in the language of the Chokwe People of Central Africa.
