Olafur Eliasson - Supercube star (blue), 2019

Starting price 80.000 EUR

Result:
110.000 EUR

Supercube star (blue) (2019) is derived from a unique polyhedral module interlocked in a star shape. Inspired by earlier geometric studies conducted by R. Buckminster Fuller and further developed in close collaboration between Olafur Eliasson and mathematician Einar Thorsteinn (1942–2015), this stackable, twelve-sided module is based on two rotated cubes and the golden ratio. The module has appeared in number of earlier works by Eliasson, including Green light (2016), first shown at the 57th Venice Biennale, and Less ego wall (2015), as shown at Moderna Museet, Stockholm in 2015/16. In Supercube star (blue), Eliasson continues to explore the module’s potential as a sculptural form: Ten modules, each composed of steel frames and panes of handmade and color-effect filter glass, are combined to produce a suspended angular star. A fluorescent light inside each module shines through the tinted glass, casting colored light onto its surroundings and in turn integrating the environment into the work itself.

Exhibition History: Since the mid-1990s, Olafur Eliasson has realised numerous major exhibitions and art projects around the world, including solo shows at Tate Modern, London (2003; 2019), Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2015), Leeum, Samsung Museum of Modern Art, Seoul (2016/17), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2018), The Serralves Museum and Park, Porto (2019), and MOT, Tokyo (2020).

Stainless steel, colour-effect filter glass (cyan), glass mirror, silvered coloured glass (shades of blue), coloured glass (shades of blue, yellow), paint (black, grey), fluorescent light, wire, transformer, cable 42 × 92 × 97 cm unique
